Robert Ivy overseas the operations of over 250 chapters of the American Institute of Architects as its EVP and CEO. He was named CEO of American Institute of Architects(AIA) in 2011. Before joining AIA, Robert Ivy worked at McGraw-Hill Construction and Architectural Record, a magazine.
Robert Ivy and company are taking an alternative approach to improving public health. Robert Ivy believes that design choices can ultimately increase activities to people in the area and in turn benefit their health.
“The idea with Central Park was to eradicate substandard housing and normalize a part of the city that was challenged,” Robert Ivy began. “Architecture can likely affect a community’s rate of [diseases], such as diabetes and heart disease.” he said.
It is true that using architectural design is a new way to improve public health, but results are already being seen. Robert Ivy contributes the original trend to the younger architects. Ivy says that the younger population is more sociable, and due to this they are designing buildings and outdoor facilities with this in mind. The result is bigger, more wide open spaces that allow people to mingle and perform other activities.
